Mark Latonero is the Lead researcher for the Data & Human Rights program at Data & Society. He is a visiting scholar at NYU and a senior research fellow at the USC Annenberg School’s Center on Communication Leadership & Policy where he led its Technology and Human Trafficking initiative as a research professor and research director.

Dr. Latonero works on the implications of emerging technology and policy in humanitarian and human rights contexts. He conducts research that examines the benefits, risks, and harms of data-driven technologies particularly where vulnerable populations are concerned, such as a project he is currently researching with refugees and migrants. As the Lead on Data & Human Rights, he produces action-orientated research and engages with international organizations, businesses, governments, NGOs, academics, and other key stakeholders.

He has published a number of reports on the role of big data analytics, mobile, and online technologies in human trafficking, child exploitation, and migration. He has led field research in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Greece, Haiti, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Research projects from this initiative have been supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Municipality of The Hague, Humanity United, USAID, and UNICEF, among others.

A frequent public speaker at conferences and workshops, Latonero publishes in academic journals such as Computer Mediated Communication, Information Communication & Society, and Crisis Response and Management. In addition, he publishes in venues such as the Guardian and Foreign Affairs and his work has been covered by the Associated Press, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBS Radio, CNN, Fast Company, Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, and The New York Times.

Latonero completed his PhD at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and was a postdoctoral research scholar at the London School of Economics.
